چکیده

This paper deals with silver sorption toMyxococcus xanthus biomass. The dry biomass of this microorganism is shown to be a good sorbent for the recovery of silver present at low solution concentrations. Between initial silver concentrations of 2 and 0.05 mM, the percentage of accumulation ranges from 8.12% to 75% of the total silver present in the solution. Transmission electron microscopy study of M: xanthus wet biomass after silver accumulation shows the sorption within the extracellular polysaccharide, on the cell wall, and in the cytoplasm. The presence of silver deposits in the cytoplasm indicates that at least two mechanisms are involved in silver sorption by this bacterium biomass. First, silver was bound to the cell surface and extracellular polysaccharide, and second, a silver intracellular deposition process took place. The higher amount of silver deposits

Comparative heavy metal biosorption study of brewery yeast and Myxococcus xanthus biomass.

The biosorption for La2+, Co2+, Mn2+, UO2(2+), Pb2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Cr2+ by wet and dry biomass form Myxococcus xanthus obtained from laboratory cultures and Saccharomyces cerevisiae from the brewing industry has been studied. M. xanthus biomass was found to be the most efficient biosorbent for all of the metals assayed. However, due to the fact that S. cerevisiae is a low cost residual by...

Lanthanum fixation by Myxococcus xanthus: cellular location and extracellular polysaccharide observation.

Myxococcus xanthus is a soil bacterium of the myxobacteria group and is abundant in almost all soils. Its role in soil ecology is considered significant. One noteworthy characteristic of the bacterium is that it produces large quantities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). It is also known that its biomass has the capacity to fix heavy metals. Here it is reported that M. xanthus was ab...

Myxococcus xanthus biomass as biosorbent for lead.

This paper deals with lead biosorption by Myxococcus xanthus biomass in which dry biomass, accumulating up to 1.28 mmol of lead g(-1), is demonstrated to be a more efficient biosorbent than wet biomass. Dry biomass biosorption was found to be very rapid, reaching equilibrium after 5-10 min. Culture age, the initial lead concentration and pH affected this process, but temperature did not. Furthe...

Sorption and desorption of Cd, Cu and Pb using biomass from an eutrophized habitat in monometallic and bimetallic systems.

This work examines the sorption capacity of a natural biomass collected from an irrigation pond. The biomass mainly consisted of a mixture of chlorophyte algae with caducipholic plants. Biosorption experiments were performed in monometallic and bimetallic solutions containing different metals commonly found in industrial effluents (Cd, Cu and Pb). The biosorption process was slightly slower in ...

Kinetics of Chromium Sorption on Biomass Fungi from Aqueous Solution

The kinetics of chromium ions sorption from aqueous solution on fungi biomass have been investigated in a batch system. The experimental data were analysed based on an intraparticle diffusion equation and a pseudo-second-order mechanism, in order to predict the constant rate of sorption and the equilibrium capacity with the effect of initial chromium ions concentration, temperature and initial ...
